A regular meeting of the elders of Harris Creek Baptist Church was called to order October 11, 2017, at 6:30 a.m. Brad Lail, Chair, presided. A quorum was present. In attendance were Blair Browning, Brady Herbert, P. Michael Smith, Jim Underwood, and Kevin Jackson. Also in attendance were Rebecca Harris, Joey White, Trent Horner, Drew Greenway, and Jon Green.
Brad Lail opened the meeting in prayer.
The minutes from the September 13th meeting were reviewed and approved.
Joey White gave a brief overview of the September financials for the church as well as provided an overview of the church's progress with Our Turn. The final 2 ½ month stretch of Our Turn is obviously important. We have operated in a lean manner underspending every month of this year's budget. At the same time, the Board made sure we weren't constraining anyone or any ministry opportunities. We talked in-depth about budgeting increases for next year – particularly with the new building. The target delivery for the new building is still the beginning of summer, which would put us in good position to open the building at the outset of the school year. The budget for 2018 will be presented at our next Board meeting.
Jon Green and Rebecca Harris discussed an exciting opportunity (first discussed last month) with our downtown space at the Hippodrome as it relates to families. The space currently used for our kids during Sunday mornings was sold and though we have the chance to rent it for the same price through 2018, a change was coming. With the Hippodrome's expansion efforts, they have purchased the back lot and building and we will now rent a large space behind the Hippodrome from them. This will serve multiple purposes and be a great blessing to families who will no longer have to cross the street to drop off/pick up their kids. There is a lot more room and it includes office space, rooms for kids, Navigate, etc. Further, it provides opportunities for our staff/interns to have a downtown presence throughout the week, for ministries/Life groups to possibly meet, and for the Sunwest campus to have some office space open up to enable potential new hires to have space. The elders each walked through the space the following week and were told the ideas for the space ranging from paint to who would office where and more – we unanimously approved the money necessary, which will actually come from unused budgeted funds this year. Even if it weren't, we would have unanimously approved this as we see the tremendous value this will provide the Downtown campus.
Blair Browning and Kevin Jackson provided an update on the prospective elders. Both men have agreed to be considered and go through the selection process. Brady Herbert will provide them with the PI, as well as an elder questionnaire form. We have lined up interviews with them to be held at an additional meeting at the beginning of November.
The elders approved a recommendation from the Executive team that Brady Herbert will experiment with static preaching at Sunwest on Sunday mornings. In addition to it taking out the guesswork for people who want to know where he will be, it will also be less taxing on him as he will be able to avoid the drive across town in between sermons. Further, this follows multi-site model "best practices," as well as helping us look at the potential of live-streaming in the future.
We talked about multiple prayer requests and Brady Herbert closed in prayer.
