A regular meeting of the elders of Harris Creek Baptist Church was called to order September 13, 2017, at 6:30 a.m. Brad Lail, Chair, presided. A quorum was present. In attendance were Blair Browning, Brady Herbert, Chris Holmes, Jim Underwood, Mark Welstead, and Kevin Jackson. Also in attendance were Rebecca Harris, Joey White, Trent Horner, Drew Greenway, and Jon Green.
Brad Lail opened the meeting in prayer.
The minutes from the August 2nd meeting were reviewed and approved.
Joey White gave a brief overview of the August financials for the church as well as provided an overview of the church's progress with Our Turn. This quarter's Our Turn updates will go out this week and Brady will address the church this Sunday (9/17) on the status.
Brady Herbert led a discussion with regard to a multi-site opportunity that has been presented to Harris Creek by another local church. The executive team from staff met to discuss the viability of an additional site since our last elder meeting and presented a thorough proposal. There is great potential at the site and it has the prospects of being a catalyst to growth in the church, but without financial margin, Brady said he just does not see how we can take this on at the time. There would be additional staffing necessary in additional to other monthly costs. We all trust that if the Lord wants Harris Creek there, He will make it abundantly clear on the financial front, but that currently, the report from Brady and executive team is to pass.
Brady Herbert, Joey White, and Jon Green described a looming deadline involving our kids' location at the downtown site. We have space leased through the end of 2018 so this is not imminent, but we are actively seeking alternative plans for the future to be prepared. We discussed an opportunity that exists with our current landlord at the Hippodrome, which would bring stability to this area of the downtown campus.
Drew Greenway and Rebecca Harris talked about Deacons and their current form and function within the church. (*NOTE: We had a strategic elder meeting on the evening of 8/22 where this topic was the main conversation so this report is a follow-up from that meeting*). Drew led a focus group with four current Deacons and presented some of the thoughts/themes that came out of that time. We had a very informative and healthy discussion about how best to move forward with this important group of servant leaders at our church. We encouraged Drew to lead an additional focus group or two in order to represent more voices and he will report next meeting from those times. Trent Horner also highlighted approaches from two other churches with regard to Deacons to inform the board of structure and function, which was helpful.
Brad Lail reiterated date/time for an upcoming strategic meeting regarding new elder selection and then Jim Underwood closed in prayer.
